Scientific enquiry is about searching for truth not making people feel good about themselves.

Selywn Duke's take on the recent fuss over the geneticist, James Watson, who caused a stir by claiming research data shows those in Africa aren't as intellectually capable as other groups.

The thing that gets me about the PC police & the left-leanign mindset on issues like this is the skewing of semantics & the meanings of words into something the man did not say. The Left & the PC cops would have you think that Watson said something to the affect of "Africans/Blacks are intellectually incapable compared to other races, not as intellectually capable," which is a huge difference.

If you interpret that he said the former you basically read it as "Africans/Blacks are stupid." If you interpret the latter you read it as "Africans/Blacks on the whole are generally less capable intellectually." Which to most I'm sure still sounds as daming as saying "Africans/Blacks are stupid." But let's hold on for a minute.

Say hypothetically, you take an infinite # of tests which measure intellectual capacity of certain races as a quantifiable # & for the sake of the argument it comes out something like this:

1. Asians, 98
2. Native American, 97
3. White, 95
4. Arab, 94
5. Hispanic, 93
6. African, 92

Now, this list shows hypothetically that some races are more intellectually capable than others, but if we assign a test like score to these hypothetical results, everyone gets an "A" or is intellectual capable as a whole but not as capable compared to each other. So for once, we need to back up & really think about what people say & understand what they mean rather than always jump to the PC, feeling friendly conclusion & the ever ready leap to outrage.

Put this another way, if what James Watson said about possible intellectual differences amongst the races bothers you, turn it on yourself & see if you agree or disagree with statements such as "Asians are better at math," "White Men Can't Jump," "Latin lover," etc. etc.

P.S. I like the point Selwyn Duke makes in his article about how people will argue about how evolution supposedly causes groups in different environments to develop genetic differences except in humans' case & that the reason for this would be a good argument for the existence of God.

Gundy says it perfectly when he says "you wanna come after somebody, come after me." He is the head coach, he is the one responsible for the team's performance, he is the one with big salary, take him on & question him, not the kid (player) who just didn't play well. Gundy also has a perfect point when he says if you're going to go after a kid, go after one that is not doing the right things.

A Wall Street Trader Draws Some Subprime Lessons: Michael Lewis

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- So right after the Bear Stearns funds blew up, I had a thought: This is what happens when you lend money to poor people.

Don't get me wrong: I have nothing personally against the poor. To my knowledge, I have nothing personally to do with the poor at all. It's not personal when a guy cuts your grass: that's business. He does what you say, you pay him. But you don't pay him in advance: That would be finance. And finance is one thing you should never engage in with the poor. (By poor, I mean anyone who the SEC wouldn't allow to invest in my hedge fund.)

That's the biggest lesson I've learned from the subprime crisis. Along the way, as these people have torpedoed my portfolio, I had some other thoughts about the poor. I'll share them with you.

1) They're masters of public relations.

I had no idea how my open-handedness could be made to look, after the fact. At the time I bought the subprime portfolio I thought: This is sort of like my way of giving something back. I didn't expect a profile in Philanthropy Today or anything like that. I mean, I bought at a discount. But I thought people would admire the Wall Street big shot who found a way to help the little guy. Sort of like a money doctor helping a sick person. Then the little guy wheels around and gives me this financial enema. And I'm the one who gets crap in the papers! Everyone feels sorry for the poor, and no one feels sorry for me. Even though it's my money! No good deed goes unpunished.

2) Poor people don't respect other people's money in the way money deserves to be respected.

Call me a romantic: I want everyone to have a shot at the American dream. Even people who haven't earned it. I did everything I could so that these schlubs could at least own their own place. The media is now making my generosity out to be some kind of scandal. Teaser rates weren't a scandal. Teaser rates were a sign of misplaced trust: I trusted these people to get their teams of lawyers to vet anything before they signed it. Turns out, if you're poor, you don't need to pay lawyers. You don't like the deal you just wave your hands in the air and moan about how poor you are. Then you default.

3) I've grown out of touch with ``poor culture.''

Hard to say when this happened; it might have been when I stopped flying commercial. Or maybe it was when I gave up the bleacher seats and got the suite. But the first rule in this business is to know the people you're in business with, and I broke it. People complain about the rich getting richer and the poor being left behind. Is it any wonder? Look at them! Did it ever occur to even one of them that they might pay me back by WORKING HARDER? I don't think so.

But as I say, it was my fault, for not studying the poor more closely before I lent them the money. When the only time you've ever seen a lion is in his cage in the zoo, you start thinking of him as a pet cat. You forget that he wants to eat you.

4) Our society is really, really hostile to success. At the same time it's shockingly indulgent of poor people.

A Republican president now wants to bail them out! I have a different solution. Debtors' prison is obviously a little too retro, and besides that it would just use more taxpayers' money. But the poor could work off their debts. All over Greenwich I see lawns to be mowed, houses to be painted, sports cars to be tuned up. Some of these poor people must have skills. The ones that don't could be trained to do some of the less skilled labor -- say, working as clowns at rich kids' birthday parties. They could even have an act: put them in clown suits and see how many can be stuffed into a Maybach. It'd be like the circus, only better.

Transporting entire neighborhoods of poor people to upper Manhattan and lower Connecticut might seem impractical. It's not: Mexico does this sort of thing routinely. And in the long run it might be for the good of poor people. If the consequences were more serious, maybe they wouldn't stay poor.

5) I think it's time we all become more realistic about letting the poor anywhere near Wall Street.

Lending money to poor countries was a bad idea: Does it make any more sense to lend money to poor people? They don't even have mineral rights!

There's a reason the rich aren't getting richer as fast as they should: they keep getting tangled up with the poor. It's unrealistic to say that Wall Street should cut itself off entirely from poor -- or, if you will, ``mainstream'' -- culture. As I say, I'll still do business with the masses. But I'll only engage in their finances if they can clump themselves together into a semblance of a rich person. I'll still accept pension fund money, for example. (Nothing under $50 million, please.) And I'm willing to finance the purchase of entire companies staffed basically with poor people. I did deals with Milken, before they broke him. I own some Blackstone. (Hang tough, Steve!)

But never again will I go one-on-one again with poor people. They're sharks.

I can't get as fiercely involved as some other people do in controversies about the origins of human life on earth. I wasn't there.

One of the painful signs of years of dumbed-down education is how many people are unable to make a coherent argument. They can vent their emotions, question other people's motives, make bold assertions, repeat slogans-- anything except reason.

Barack Obama is the newest face on the political scene, expressing some of the oldest notions. Virtually everything he says is vintage 1960s rhetoric, as if he has learned nothing from the many disasters that 1960s notions have led to in the decades since then.

People who lament the small percentages of women in some high-end jobs seem unaware that top jobs often involve 70 or 80 hours of work per week. A mother may work that many hours at home taking care of a family, without adding the same number of hours at the office.

A recent study showed the median income of major corporate CEOs to be about $8 million a year. That's less than a third of what Alex Rodriguez earns and less than one-thirtieth of what Oprah Winfrey makes. But no one is denouncing them for "greed."

It is amazing how many people who want us to get out of Iraq want us to go into Darfur.

A joke says that a poll was taken in California, asking if people thought illegal immigration was a serious problem. The results showed that 29 percent said, "Yes, there is a serious problem." But 71 percent said, "No es una problema seriosa."

People who refuse to face the reality of hard choices are forever coming up with some clever "third way"-- often leading to worse disasters than either of the hard choices.

Sometimes it looks as if the Democrats are out to win at all costs, while the Republicans are out to compromise at all costs.

Although I am ready to defend what I have said, many people expect me to defend what others have attributed to me.

A reader says that Connecticut's "Three Strikes" law is so weak that it is more like "30 strikes and we'll think about it while you strike again."

Wise people created civilization over the centuries and clever people are dismantling it today.
You can see it happening just by channel surfing on TV or hear it in rap music or read it in the pompous nonsense of academics and judges.

Tennis star James Blake never seems to be relaxed during a match. Maybe he would be ranked even higher if he could relax. Most sports require some combination of concentration and relaxation-- and too much of either is a big handicap.

Many on the political left are so entranced by the beauty of their vision that they cannot see the ugly reality they are creating in the real world.

With all the old movie favorites being shown again and again on television, it is remarkable that the old movie classic "Alfie" is seldom shown. Could it be fear that the scene where cold-blooded Alfie breaks down and cries at the sight of an aborted baby is something that would unleash the furies of the feminazis?

It is amazing how many people see no problem with having pay levels determined according to what third parties would like to see, instead of according to supply and demand.

One of the great non sequiturs of the left is that, if the free market doesn't work perfectly, then it doesn't work at all-- and the government should step in.

Despite people who speak glibly of "earlier and simpler times," all that makes earlier times seem simpler is our ignorance of their complexities.

We all believe that people are innocent until proven guilty. Some on the left believe that they are innocent even after being proven guilty.

Chutzpah department: When disbarred former D.A. Michael Nifong mailed his Bar card back to his state Bar Association, he included a note decrying "the fundamental unfairness" with which the Bar had treated him. This from a man who was ready to ruin three lives and polarize a community, in order to win an election.

And just like in Israel, the Muslim countries/peoples are causing trouble in India; dispute over the Kashmir region of norhtern India being the main example.

As always it took sportsmen a couple weeks to do something that takes politicians, even soldiers, years to do- unite a country. Haven't read about any deaths in the celebrations today from car bombbers so far & there will no doubt be some as there were following Iraq's semifinal win as death-loving murdering idiots target congregated revelers

Some might scoff at the notion that, "oh, soccer/football (or sports in general) is only a game, however, that's usually said by panty-waisted academia types who never sweated, toiled & flat out busted their asses physically day in & day out to achieve an athletic goal which is nothing more than a metaphor for what you can do with the rest of your life given the same amount of effort! Not to mention in Saddam's Iraq where his eldest son ran the Iraqi Olympic & Sports Associations, losses or failures in tournaments were greeted with torture to qthletes their families.

Similarly, even for the fans, much as the Saints did last year for New Orleans citizens (& ex-citizens, for that matter!) to give hope in days that seem darkest, this will no doubt give some hope to Iraqis that "if the national team can do it, why can't we be successful?" B/c let's face it, Iraq was not an Asian continental footballing power by any means. In my sometimes arrogant but generally correct opinion, Iraq winning the Asian Cup would be like Norway or Scotland winning the European Championship, i.e. not out of the realm of possibility but pretty distant shot(s) to say the least.

Much Disappointment Tonight...

The New York Rangers lost their 2nd round opener tonight 4-2, to the Buffalo Sabres. Except for the 1st 10 minutes or so in the opening period, the Sabres definitely lived up to their reputation of being faster & more aggressive in the offensive. The Rangers had a few chances early to get a lead on the Sabres but Ryan Miller played extremely well in net for the Sabres & only gave up 2 goals late on (goals by Hossa & Shanahan for the Rangers) when the game was already decided.

Rangers need to bounce back quickly & regain the aggressive style of play that got them past Atlanta.

Biggest disappointment of the night was seeing an utterly beautiful young lady of that olive skinned, possibly Mediterranean ancestry that I just get so easily & utterly smittened with, I mean she was absolutely gorgeous & I chickened out yet again in talking to somebody that I wanted to. I hate myself for consistenly doing this. I hate for not doing something I claimn to want to do & then backing out. I hate that I don't ever seem to get enough support from friends to ever want to be wingman enough to help me go talk to somebody. I'm tired of it. I'm fed up with it. I'm sick & tired of being sick & tired of myself. Fuck being "too young," she was drinking, she had to be at least 18! I'm 32. Who fucking cares? It's hard enough to meet people as it is & then we go & confine ourselves, restrict our options byu putting ourselves in these forced strategies... What the fuck am I supposed to look for? 28-32? 26-32? 24-32? 22-32? Fuck it all. I'm fed up. She was beautfiul, I wanted to talk to her. Why the fuck can't I ever bring myself to cross the threshold & take it upon myself to attempt that? The irony of which, I'm so confident of my abilities in every thing else save this- women. I'm tired of getting talked out of things like this, when my main motto in life is "most people are wrong, trust yourself."

I don't think people understand the depth of the loneliness of which I feel. It is so deep, I can't describe it. I have never dated anybody. I have never been in love & had it reciprocated, I have never made love. I was so drunk the couple times I think I had sex that I don't even recall if I even had sex. I am fed up. I am tired of it. I am so utterly lonely people can not comprehend it.

Where are you? Where are you, my love? The search is so daunting, so frustrating. FUCK! I want to make love to somebody. I hate having so much passion & desire & not having a proper outlet that it gets turned into anger & frustration.

Who's Usurping Power Again?

It boggles my mind that people in this country will harp all the live-long day about how President Bush stole both elections (neither of which has been proven) & how he's consolidating executive power to create this supposed fascist dictatorship... but then nobody bats an eye when Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi makes an unauthorized trip to a nation, Syria, which is still listed as hostile to the US & which we don't have formal diplomatic ties to.

Aside from the fact that Pelosi went to Syria to kiss the ass of a leader who still is alledged to have ordered an assination of Lebanon's Prime Minisiter, what infuriates me about this incident is this- As an unauthorized diplomatic visitor to Syria, Pelosi was technically visiting as a private citizen but you can guarandamntee, taxpayers paid for the unauthorized junket. Which is also nothing to say about the usurpation of power & flaunting of diplomatic & governmental rules & practices broken by her unauthorized visit. In another time, she would have been charged with treason.

Now, I just read an article Pelosi is planning the same kind of trip to Iran... which I'm pretty willing to bet also won't be authorized by President Bush either. But I keep forgetting, rules only apply to Republicans & Conservatives. Pelosi breaks rules, no big deal, free pass. DeLay breaks rules, Libby gets indicted for perjury (but the "crime" he was charged with not only not being a crime, but the incident it caused, no charge of it was brought against Libby) it's "proof" of Republican nefariousness. President Clinton gets charged with perjury about an incident which could be charged as a crime (sexual harassment, anyone?) & he gets to wear that perjury charge as, in his own words, "a badge of honor" as proof of in his husband's words, "a vast right-wing conspiracy."

Let us also not forget as soon as Pelosi began as SPeaker of the House her asking at taxpayer's expense for a large jet similar to Air Force One for her to fly back & forth to her district. What, private leer jets & 1st calss air travel isn't good enough? Heaven forbid you have to co-habitate with the plebes on an airline. You can guarantee if it was a Republican who did it, "corruption" & "cronyism" accusations would be thrown around like a little person at a dwarf tossing contest.

I got my taxes done over the weekend by my good friends, Ray & Erin, who own & operate a franchise location of Liberty Tax service in Middleburg, FL (I hate you, Middleburg!). Come to find out the lovely State of Louisiana charged me for state income tax for the entire year last year even though I've lived in Florida since September '05.... Great government in action again! The beauty of this snafu in the end will be, that the goofy bobbleheaded governor of Louisiana, Kathleen Babineaux "Bobblehead" Blanco will end up sending me back my money to help pay towards King Bush & the Republicans. Gotta love it!... if I can get my damn money back in the 1st place!

I'm Wicked Smart, Suckas!

I called it this afternoon! The "kid" who shot & killed 5 people in a Salt Lake City mall while critically wounding 4 others & whose condition is still in doubt was named Solejman Talovic & was a Bosnian Muslim immigrant. I knew this afternoon when I read that name that there was a ridiculously high chance that he was going to be a Muslim. But watch how the news media tries their damnedest to turn this into a Columbine-like copycat crime & not a Muslim-influenced hate crime against the West.

I'm not even going into the conversation about Islam is a "religion of peace." I know this, I've heard it before, I understand it, however I'm also not dumb enough to believe that people can use Islam as an influence in these shootings (such as the one in Seattle last summer & the injuring of students on a North Carolina college campus earlier) by distorting the teachings to fit their own selfish agendas & then espousing these distortions to impressionable youths.
