2nd Rain Shortened Shutout This Season For The Mets

Just 2 days past the month anniversery of Tom Glavine's rain-shortened complete game shutout, John Maine grabbed a 4 1/2 inning complete game shutout this afternoon in the series wrap with the Washington Nationals. Lastings Milledge & David Wright continued their hot hitting for the Mets & John Maine threw a one-hitter through 5 to get the Mets the victory. Maine moves to 12-5 on the season. Is Maine the Mets' Ace now? Hmmmmmmm, discuss...

Paul Lo Duca left last night's game with a leg injury in the 7th & the Mets are expecting an MRI tonight to find out the severity. Seems like a guy gets hurt every week now.

The Phillies won today also so they remain 4 GB the Mets after today. Oops, take that back, make that 3.5 GB.

At the time of this post, Atlanta is up 6-0 on Arizona at the end of 2. The Ted Turners are 4 GB.

Travel day for the Mets tomorrow has the go to Milwaukee to face the BrewHaHas, the surprise leader of the NL Central. Looks like Glavine is the scheduled starter for Tuesday night's game vs. MillerTown. As you know Glavine will be going for his 300th career win & is looking to become the 1st Met to win 300 as a Met, not just being a Met at one time in a career & winning 300. Seaver won his 300th with the Pale Hose & the Ryan Express won his #300 with the George Bush Rangers, back in the days before President George W. Bush somehow metamorphosed into Satan.

Congratulations to Iraq!

As always it took sportsmen a couple weeks to do something that takes politicians, even soldiers, years to do- unite a country. Even if it is only for a short respite I can't imagine what this does to Iraqis' psyche in terms of hope. Haven't read about any deaths in the celebrations today from car bombbers so far & there will no doubt be some as there were following Iraq's semifinal win as death-loving murdering idiots target congregated revelers

Some might scoff at the notion that, "oh, soccer/football (or sports in general) is only a game, however, that's usually said by panty-waisted academia types who never sweated, toiled & flat out busted their asses physically day in & day out to achieve an athletic goal which is nothing more than a metaphor for what you can do with the rest of your life given the same amount of effort! Not to mention in Saddam's Iraq where his eldest son ran the Iraqi Olympic & Sports Associations, losses or failures in tournaments were greeted with torture to qthletes their families.

Similarly, even for the fans, much as the Saints did last year for New Orleans citizens (& ex-citizens, for that matter!) to give hope in days that seem darkest, this will no doubt give some hope to Iraqis that "if the national team can do it, why can't we be successful?" B/c let's face it, Iraq was not an Asian continental footballing power by any means. In my sometimes arrogant but generally correct opinion, Iraq winning the Asian Cup would be like Norway or Scotland winning the European Championship, i.e. not out of the realm of possibility but pretty distant shot(s) to say the least.

Anyway, I'm sure politico types on both sides & including the Middle East will use this as political ammo to advance their causes, but police office Sabah Shaiyal in the linked office put it best:

Mets Split Douple Dip Against Nationals

Quick entry here since I pulled one of my stay-up-til-dawn-doing-my-stats-research, so I got up late & the Mets have already started their game today.

The Mets split their doubleheader with the Nationals yesterday 3-1 with a fine pitching performance from El Duque.

In the 2nd half of the doubleheader, the Nationals scored 3 in the top of the 8th to break a 3-all deadlock & went on to outlast the Mets rally, 6-5. No recap b/c ummm, I don't know why really, I guess Yahoo! has an embargo on 2nd half doubleheader recaps. Only boxes. Um, like whatevah.

Emirates Cup This Weekend

Arsenal play their 1st Emirates Cup match today. The Emirates Cup for those that don't know is a pre-season tournament held over a weekend at Arsenal's home ground, Emirates Stadium. This year's participants include: Paris- St. Germain (Arsenal's opponents today), Inter-Milan (Arsenal's opponents tomorrow) & Valencia.

Emmanuel Adebayor, Tomas Rosicky & Theo Walcott will all miss this weekend's tournament with minor injuries picked up in Arsenal's training camp in Austria. According to Arsenal.com, the injuries are not serious & the players are being held out of the tournament as a precaution.

Too Late News!: Freddie Ljungberg was sold to West Ham United during the week, so that means there is no one left at Arsenal from the 2002 double winning side & that Arsene Wenger has for all intents & purposes has completely rebirthed the Arsenal side.

Mets Downed By The Nationals, 6-2

Jorge Sosa started wild & ended up giving up 6 runs in a 6-2 loss to the Nats. From the onset he didn't have good control & it cost him b/c he'd then throw meatballs over the plate looking for strikes & Ryan Church & Dmitri Young (Austin Kearns went yard as well) made him pay for it.

Offensively, the Mets got runners they just couldn't get the hit in key spots to get them home. So, Sosa drops t0 7-6 & former Met, Mike Bacsik picked up the win for the Nats moving to 4-6 on the year.

Luckily the Braves lost to the D-backs in 11 so now both Atlanta & Philly are 4 games back of the Metropolitans going into today's action.

In Transaction news, Joe Smith was demoted to AAA New Orleans while Jon Adkins was called up to fill his spot in the bullpen. Moises Alou also played his 1st game since May coming off a long stint out with a leg injury.

Up today: A Double Dipper! In the 1st game at 12:10 EDST, Tim Redding is scheduled to pitch for the Nationals facing El Duque for the Mets. In the nightcap, Mike Pelfrey for the Mets is scheduled to face off against Joel Hanrahan at 7:10 EDST

Whoa! Mets Lose In Matinee Yesterday, 8-4 To Los Piratos

A non-holiday matinee?? I didn't know the MLB still had businessman specials on non-holiday afternoons!

The Mighty Metropolitans lost to the Pirates despite Oliver Perez K-ing 9 through 6 innings. THe Pirates were helped out & spurred on to victory thanks to an error-plagued 5th inning where they scored 5 runs, all unearned.

Glavine 1 Win Away From 300, Mets Top Pirates, 6-3

How many does your junk throwing lefty have?

Tom Glavine is just one win short of the lofty 300 club. While he'll most likely never reach the truly elite echelon of wins like Clemens & Maddux have, Glavine needs just that solitary win to join one of baseball's most exclusive clubs- 300 Wins.

Not bad at all for a guy who has made his living off of getting called strikes a good foot or so off the outside black for a the better part of 2 decades. Maddening for me when he was a Brave, truly scrumptious since he's now a Met. Hurrah.
